The Darling Downs Power Station is the biggest combined power station in Australia. Using new technology, the power station utilises cleaner natural gas-fired electricity to produce 20% less greenhouse gas emissions than conventional coal-fired power stations.

As the on-site Geotechnical Testing Authority for the project, SQS established a NATA accredited on-site laboratory with full-time specialist staff. From the earliest stages of site preparation and during the 2.5 year construction period, the on-site facility remained in place providing direct access to accurate testing. SQS worked closely with the project management team from Laing O’Rourke, to coordinate and carry out a comprehensive range of geotechnical testing throughout all construction phases.

The on-site facility provided:

  • Level 1 Supervision of the earthworks
  • Compaction testing
  • Concrete testing
  • Testing for hardstand parking areas and roadways.

The project received extended technical support through another of SQS’s NATA accredited laboratories in Chinchilla. This project showcased our ability to provide accurate and timely services to the client for a major infrastructure project over a long duration programme; further solidifying SQS’s reputation as a reliable and high-quality geotechnical testing authority.
