Following record drought conditions in South East Queensland and to safeguard future supply of potable water for the region, the Hinze Dam Alliance was appointed in 2007 to undertake the planning, approval, design and construction for the raising of the Hinze Dam wall. The dam is the primary source of the Gold Coast water supply and was required to be raised by 15 metres to a new wall height of 108.5 metres. The spillway and intake towers were also raised and recreational areas and road infrastructure re-established.

With proven accuracy and expertise assessing and testing soils, aggregates and concrete for major construction projects, SQS was selected as the geotechnical contractor for the Hinze Dam. The services were provided from a NATA accredited mobile laboratory situated on-site.

Services included:

  • Preliminary testing
  • Compaction testing
  • Grading of the construction aggregates
  • Analysis of the concrete supply
  • Compression testing of concrete

The complex nature of the project to raise the dam wall through an earth core fill required thorough investigation and strict compliance with project specifications. SQS accurately determined the required soil compaction and concrete strengths to ensure that the project met the design criteria.  The proficiency of the services provided by SQS enabled the contractor to control risk through ensuring that all materials were successfully tested to meet the relevant Australian Standards and this contributed to the efficient progression of the construction programme.
